Learn Why Bus Lane Colored Surfacing Is An Important Undertaking

By Jerry Perry

For many years now, anti-skid coating has provided an effective road safety measure to highway engineers. This has been found to save lives by reducing accidents. With high friction surfacing, vehicle skid related accidents as well as financial and human related expenses have been significantly cut down. It is also possible to achieve bus lane colored surfacing through high friction surfacing. The material used is usually effective in delineating certain areas on the highway as a reinforcement on conventional road signs.

Normally, the materials that are used for coloring the lanes improves skid resistance on road surfaces, creating some braking distance. In certain areas, colored lanes have become effective by reducing the high risk of traffic contraventions. As an outcome, this has become desirable for cycle paths, rail crossing and pedestrians, bus lanes and busy junctions. Such treatments and markings alert road users as they reach modified places.

Usually, bus lanes are only restricted for buses in certain days or hours. They can also be used to speed up public transport to avoid traffic congestion. Nevertheless, colored marking on these lanes may be done together with other road signs. The marking should be carried out to the desired maximum that would convey the necessary message to road users. Color markings are often used in areas where the driver is required to avoid or proceed with caution.

Grey and red surfaces are usually used on these lanes. However, red treatment has to be done at the bus gates or in 24 hours lanes. Red treatment is normally made to complement signs on the road in order to acquire road safety. Also, it is used to show substantial change in road character as a sub urban entrance. Grey treatments with anti-skid materials are used purely due to their physical properties, for example, near pedestrian crossing approaches, high stress areas and in roundabout circulations.

In case the red marking is performed on cycle lanes, it is usually aimed at showing mandatory and advisory signs near access to cycle lanes. Again, it can be used in private pavements with heavy traffic or across side roads entrance.

It is important to note that some colored surfaces cannot be considered to be road signs or makings. This means that such color markings lack legal status. Majority of such color marking are only used to support the right road markings. However, such measures result to improved road operations and safety.

Before carrying out such color treatments on the road, the first step is to know the safety and operational problem and this may call for serious investigations. This is in order to ensure that such markings are appropriate and in good condition, not obscured as well as the right size and sufficient performance. If the current color markings do not offer the intended result, upgrading could be necessary to enhance result.

When accurately done, colored surfaces results in huge benefits. This treatment approach has been used in controlling specific accidents and ensuring that the roads are efficient and effective. This has made bus lane marking an important undertaking.
